Description: Estimate calories burned walking on an incline treadmill by body weight, duration and grade. Compare published hill-grade MET estimates.

## Incline Treadmill Calorie Calculator

A 70 kg person burns about 278 calories in 30 minutes at a 1–5% incline-equivalent grade with a moderate-to-brisk walking pace.

Steeper grades raise the estimate quickly because uphill walking requires more work.

## Calories burned on an incline treadmill

Choose your body weight, then compare published hill-climbing MET equivalents across representative grades and durations.

Body weight: 70 kg

| Grade / pace | 15 min | 30 min | 60 min |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1–5% grade moderate–brisk | 97 kcal | 195 kcal | 390 kcal |
| 6–10% grade moderate–brisk | 129 kcal | 257 kcal | 514 kcal |
| 11–20% grade slow–moderate | 162 kcal | 323 kcal | 647 kcal |
| 3–5% grade very fast, 6.4–8.0 km/h | 184 kcal | 368 kcal | 735 kcal |

## Calculate incline treadmill calories

Enter your body weight and duration, then choose the grade-and-pace category closest to your workout.

These presets use published uphill walking MET categories as incline-treadmill approximations. Speed and grade must both be considered.

## What changes incline treadmill calorie burn?

Incline alone is not enough; pace and how you use the treadmill matter too.

### Incline

Steeper grades increase vertical work and can raise energy expenditure substantially.

### Walking speed

The same incline at a faster pace requires more work.

### Rail support

Leaning on the handrails reduces the amount of body weight you are actively moving.

### Body weight

At the same MET and duration, a higher body weight produces a higher estimate.

## One workout is easy to estimate. The whole day is harder.

Kibora helps you put food, calories and activity into context so you can understand how everything adds up across your day.

## Calculation methodology and sources

The 2024 Adult Compendium does not provide a full treadmill speed-by-grade matrix, so this page uses published uphill walking grade categories as transparent incline-treadmill approximations.

### Grade assumptions

The Compendium lists hill climbing with no load at 5.3 METs for 1–5% grade at a moderate-to-brisk pace, 7.0 METs for 6–10%, and 8.8 METs for 11–20% at a slow-to-moderate pace.

It also lists very fast hill climbing at 6.4–8.0 km/h on a 3–5% grade at 10.0 METs.

### Important limitation

These are hill-climbing reference values, not direct laboratory measurements for every treadmill setting.

The page therefore labels them as grade-and-pace categories rather than claiming an exact calorie value for a given treadmill incline percentage alone.

### Calorie calculation

Calories are estimated with: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.

## FAQ

### How many calories does incline treadmill walking burn?

It depends on body weight, incline and pace. Using Compendium hill-climbing equivalents, a 70 kg person burns about 278 calories in 30 minutes at a 1–5% grade with a moderate-to-brisk pace and about 462 calories at an 11–20% grade with a slow-to-moderate pace.

### Does a 10% incline burn more calories than flat walking?

Yes. Uphill walking requires additional vertical work. The Compendium assigns 7.0 METs to moderate-to-brisk hill climbing at a 6–10% grade, well above typical level walking.

### Is treadmill incline the same as outdoor hill grade?

Not perfectly. This page uses published hill-grade MET categories as a transparent approximation for incline treadmill walking rather than claiming treadmill grade is physiologically identical in every condition.

### Does holding the treadmill rails affect calories burned?

It can. Supporting body weight on the rails can reduce the actual work required, so estimates may overstate expenditure if you lean heavily on them.
