## Incline Walking Calorie Calculator

A 70 kg person burns about 257 calories in 30 minutes of incline walking at a moderate 6–10% grade.

Your estimate changes with body weight, incline grade and duration.

## Calories burned incline walking

Choose your body weight, then compare estimated calorie burn across uphill grades and workout durations.

Body weight: 70 kg

| Incline grade | 15 min | 30 min | 60 min |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Light incline 1–5% grade · moderate-to-brisk | 97 kcal | 195 kcal | 390 kcal |
| Moderate incline 6–10% grade · moderate-to-brisk | 129 kcal | 257 kcal | 515 kcal |
| Steep incline 11–20% grade · slow-to-moderate | 162 kcal | 323 kcal | 647 kcal |

## Calculate your incline-walking calories

Enter your body weight and walking duration, then choose the incline range that best matches your session.

This is a MET-based estimate for uphill walking. Actual energy expenditure varies with speed, grade, terrain and individual efficiency.

## What changes incline-walking calorie burn?

The same amount of walking time can produce different calorie estimates depending on grade, body weight and how the incline is performed.

### Body weight

At the same grade and duration, a heavier body generally has a higher estimated energy expenditure.

### Incline grade

Steeper uphill grades raise the energy cost of walking and increase the MET value.

### Walking speed

The Compendium grade categories also specify pace, so changing speed can change effort even at the same incline.

### Terrain and technique

Outdoor surfaces, treadmill setup, handrail use and individual walking economy can all change actual energy expenditure.

## One incline walk is easy to estimate. The whole day is harder.

Kibora helps you put food, calories and activity into context so you can understand how everything adds up across your day.

## Calculation methodology and sources

These estimates use uphill-walking MET values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities and the standard MET calorie-expenditure equation.

### Incline grade and intensity

The 2024 Adult Compendium lists 5.3 METs for climbing hills with no load at a 1–5% grade at a moderate-to-brisk pace, 7.0 METs at a 6–10% grade at a moderate-to-brisk pace, and 8.8 METs at an 11–20% grade at a slow-to-moderate pace.

These three grade ranges are used as the calculator intensity presets and reference-table rows.

### Calorie calculation

Calories are estimated with the standard MET equation: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.

Reference-table values are rounded to the nearest whole calorie. Calculator results can retain one decimal place.

### Assumptions and limitations

The published categories combine incline with pace, so grade alone does not fully determine intensity.

Outdoor terrain, treadmill calibration, handrail use, fitness and individual walking economy can make actual calorie expenditure differ from the estimate.

## FAQ

### How many calories does 30 minutes of incline walking burn?

It depends on body weight and grade. Using the estimates on this page, a 70 kg person burns about 195 calories in 30 minutes at a 1–5% grade, 257 calories at 6–10%, and 323 calories at 11–20%.

### Does a steeper incline burn more calories?

Generally, yes. Uphill walking has a higher MET value as grade increases, so estimated calorie burn per minute rises when body weight and duration stay the same.

### Is incline walking the same as incline treadmill walking?

Not exactly. The reference values here come from uphill walking categories in the Adult Compendium. A treadmill can reproduce grade more consistently, but speed, handrail use and machine setup can change actual effort.

### Does body weight affect incline-walking calorie burn?

Yes. The standard MET calorie equation scales with body weight, so a heavier person has a higher estimated calorie expenditure at the same grade and duration.

### Why is my treadmill or watch different from this estimate?

Machines and wearables may use speed, grade, heart rate and proprietary formulas. This page uses published MET categories, so different methods can produce different results.
