## Rucking Calorie Calculator

A 70 kg person burns about 184–368 calories in 30 minutes of loaded walking, depending on pack load, pace and terrain.

A light day pack on level ground is much less demanding than general backpacking or heavier loaded walking.

## Calories burned rucking

Choose your body weight, then compare representative loaded-walking and backpacking estimates across common durations.

Body weight: 70 kg

| Rucking / load level | 15 min | 30 min | 60 min |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Light day pack level ground | 64 kcal | 129 kcal | 257 kcal |
| Light load 2.3–6.4 kg, moderate pace | 74 kcal | 147 kcal | 294 kcal |
| Heavier load 6.8 kg+, slow pace | 83 kcal | 165 kcal | 331 kcal |
| General backpacking mixed conditions | 129 kcal | 257 kcal | 515 kcal |

## Calculate your rucking calories

Enter your body weight and duration, then choose the rucking / load level that best matches your session.

This is a MET-based estimate using representative loaded-walking activities. Pack weight, pace and terrain should be matched as closely as possible.

## What changes rucking calorie burn?

The same amount of rucking time can produce different calorie estimates depending on how the activity is performed.

### Pack weight

A heavier carried load generally increases the energy cost of walking.

### Pace

Moving faster can increase intensity even when the pack weight stays the same.

### Hills and terrain

Incline, trails and uneven surfaces can raise expenditure substantially compared with level ground.

### Body weight and efficiency

Body weight, walking economy and fitness influence the real energy cost of the session.

## One ruck is easy to estimate. The whole day is harder.

Kibora helps you put food, calories and activity into context so you can understand how everything adds up across your day.

## Calculation methodology and sources

These estimates use loaded-walking and backpacking MET values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities and the standard MET calorie-expenditure equation.

### Load and activity assumptions

The Compendium lists walking with a day pack on level ground at 3.5 METs, carrying a 2.3–6.4 kg load on level ground at a moderate pace at 4.0 METs, and carrying a 6.8 kg or heavier load on level ground at a slow pace at 4.5 METs.

General backpacking is listed at 7.0 METs. Because rucking is not one standardized pace/load combination, the page presents these as representative scenarios rather than one universal rucking MET.

### Calorie calculation

Calories are estimated with the standard MET equation: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.

Reference-table values are rounded to the nearest whole calorie. Calculator results can retain one decimal place.

### Assumptions and limitations

The calculator does not directly interpolate pack weight or hill grade. Instead, users select the Compendium scenario closest to their session.

Standard MET values are population-level estimates, so actual calorie expenditure can differ based on pack fit, terrain, gait and fitness.

## FAQ

### How many calories does rucking burn?

It depends on body weight, pack weight, pace and terrain. A 70 kg person burns about 184 calories in 30 minutes walking with a light day pack on level ground and about 368 calories in 30 minutes during general backpacking.

### Does carrying a heavier ruck burn more calories?

Usually, yes. Carrying more weight increases the energy cost of walking, although pace and terrain also matter.

### How many calories does 30 minutes of rucking burn?

For a 70 kg person, the examples on this page range from about 184 calories with a light day pack to about 368 calories for general backpacking.

### Does hiking uphill with a pack burn more calories?

Yes. Incline can increase energy expenditure substantially, so terrain should be considered separately from pack weight.

### Why can my watch show a different rucking calorie number?

Wearables may use heart rate, GPS, elevation and personal profile data. This page uses transparent Compendium MET values, so different methods can produce different results.
