## Swimming Calorie Calculator

A 70 kg person burns about 213 calories in 30 minutes of slow recreational freestyle laps.

Stroke and pace matter a lot: faster lap swimming can raise the estimate substantially.

## Calories burned swimming

Choose your body weight, then compare estimated calorie burn across representative swimming strokes and paces.

Body weight: 70 kg

| Swimming style | 15 min | 30 min | 60 min |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Recreational backstroke easy pace | 88 kcal | 176 kcal | 353 kcal |
| Slow freestyle laps recreational | 107 kcal | 213 kcal | 426 kcal |
| Medium crawl ~50 yd/min | 147 kcal | 294 kcal | 588 kcal |
| Fast freestyle laps vigorous | 180 kcal | 360 kcal | 720 kcal |

## Calculate your swimming calories

Enter your body weight and swim duration, then choose the stroke or pace that best matches your session.

This is a MET-based estimate. Stroke efficiency, rest between laps, water conditions and actual pace can change energy expenditure.

## What changes swimming calorie burn?

Swimming energy expenditure varies substantially with stroke, pace and how continuously you swim.

### Stroke

Different strokes have different energy costs even at similar perceived effort.

### Pace

Faster lap swimming increases intensity and usually raises calorie burn per minute.

### Rest between laps

Long recovery periods reduce the average energy expenditure across the full session.

### Technique and conditions

Efficiency, pool length, water temperature and open-water conditions can all affect the real workload.

## One activity is easy to estimate. The whole day is harder.

Kibora helps you put food, calories and activity into context so you can understand how everything adds up across your day.

## Calculation methodology and sources

These estimates use swimming MET values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities and the standard MET calorie-expenditure equation.

### Swimming intensity assumptions

The 2024 Adult Compendium lists recreational backstroke at 4.8 METs, slow recreational freestyle laps at 5.8 METs, medium-speed crawl around 50 yards per minute at 8.0 METs, and fast vigorous freestyle laps at 9.8 METs.

These examples provide a practical spread from easier recreational swimming to vigorous lap swimming.

### Calorie calculation

Calories are estimated with the standard MET equation: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.

Reference-table values are rounded to the nearest whole calorie. Calculator results can retain one decimal place.

### Assumptions and limitations

The calculator treats the selected duration as active swimming time and does not separately subtract rests unless the user excludes them.

Standard MET values are population-level estimates, so actual energy expenditure can differ with technique and conditioning.

## FAQ

### How many calories does 30 minutes of swimming burn?

It depends on body weight, stroke and pace. Using the estimates on this page, a 70 kg person burns about 176 calories doing recreational backstroke, 213 calories doing slow freestyle laps, 294 calories doing medium crawl, and 360 calories doing fast freestyle laps.

### How many calories does one hour of swimming burn?

For a 70 kg person, the examples on this page range from about 353 calories per hour for recreational backstroke to about 720 calories per hour for fast freestyle laps.

### Which swimming stroke burns the most calories?

Higher-intensity strokes and faster swimming generally burn more. The Compendium lists butterfly substantially above easy recreational strokes, but technique and pace matter.

### Do breaks between laps affect the estimate?

Yes. If your 30-minute pool session includes long rests, active swimming time is lower than 30 minutes and your total calorie expenditure will be lower than a continuous-swimming estimate.

### Why is my watch different from this estimate?

Wearables may detect stroke, heart rate and lap pace. This page uses standardized MET values, so some difference is expected.
