Calculation methodology and sources

These estimates use swimming MET values from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities and the standard MET calorie-expenditure equation.

Swimming intensity assumptions

The 2024 Adult Compendium lists recreational backstroke at 4.8 METs, slow recreational freestyle laps at 5.8 METs, medium-speed crawl around 50 yards per minute at 8.0 METs, and fast vigorous freestyle laps at 9.8 METs.

These examples provide a practical spread from easier recreational swimming to vigorous lap swimming.

Calorie calculation

Calories are estimated with the standard MET equation: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.
