Calculation methodology and sources

The 2024 Adult Compendium does not provide a full treadmill speed-by-grade matrix, so this page uses published uphill walking grade categories as transparent incline-treadmill approximations.

Grade assumptions

The Compendium lists hill climbing with no load at 5.3 METs for 1–5% grade at a moderate-to-brisk pace, 7.0 METs for 6–10%, and 8.8 METs for 11–20% at a slow-to-moderate pace.

It also lists very fast hill climbing at 6.4–8.0 km/h on a 3–5% grade at 10.0 METs.

Important limitation

These are hill-climbing reference values, not direct laboratory measurements for every treadmill setting.

The page therefore labels them as grade-and-pace categories rather than claiming an exact calorie value for a given treadmill incline percentage alone.

Calories are estimated with: MET × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × minutes.

Does a 10% incline burn more calories than flat walking?

Yes. Uphill walking requires additional vertical work. The Compendium assigns 7.0 METs to moderate-to-brisk hill climbing at a 6–10% grade, well above typical level walking.

Is treadmill incline the same as outdoor hill grade?

Not perfectly. This page uses published hill-grade MET categories as a transparent approximation for incline treadmill walking rather than claiming treadmill grade is physiologically identical in every condition.

Does holding the treadmill rails affect calories burned?

It can. Supporting body weight on the rails can reduce the actual work required, so estimates may overstate expenditure if you lean heavily on them.
